For Sale & Wanted

Home

Many years ago the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway had a slogan, 'Sales Preserve Steam'. Maybe they still do, but what is clear is that income from sales could be a valuable additional source of funds, a source that has been neglected in recent years simply because there is no-one to take on the task of organising it.

However, here is The Trust's list of items, which is updated periodically. The initials of a Trustee may be found by some items: please refer to that person for details.

Items in brackets are temporarily unavailable, but please enquire anyway: We may not seek to restock if there is no demand, but may do if there is.

Part B. DON BRECKON PRINTS (contact Dave Davies)

Coasting Home

Many people will be aware of the superb railway paintings of Don Breckon. Indeed, some of you might have one or more of his lovely books.

Of all contemporary artists, his style is perhaps closer to photographic realism than most. The majority of his output was of scenes of the GWR. From his voluminous library of books on railway photography, either he would choose a picturesque scene (or those who commissioned his paintings would select a location which held memories for them) and produce a clear, technically correct, three-quarter front view of a GWR loco in mid-chrome green with copper chimney top and brass detailing, pulling a rake of chocolate-and-cream carriages. As if that was not enough - and as Don once said, you have to paint a picture that the non-railway enthusiast could also enjoy - the rest of the picture contained elements which made the whole canvas gel into an idyllic, yet realistic scene, viz, a couple of small children watching the train go by; a farmer in his field with a Fordson Major, ploughing; a Crossley single decker bus or an Austin 7 wending its way to the station, together with trees, a little cottage, and so on, all beautifully picturesque.

Occasionally, Don was encouraged to have a painting reproduced as full sized prints. For those who could never afford an original, the prints themselves have enjoyed a ready sale for the last 25 years or so, usually via outlets (e.g. galleries) that specialise in that sort of thing.

Now Don has decided to hang up his brushes and easel, and return to Dorset. However, in his studio he discovered several unopened packs of beautiful prints which somehow, over the years, had been forgotten about.

"Coasting Home" is a print of a GWR 'Prairie' class 2-6-2 side-tank engine No. 4160 (built 1948) pulling a rake of 3 coaches, set in a county branchline scene, passing over a small bridge with a stream. Trees frame the scene at the edges, with a glimpse of the branchline disappearing in the distance amid fields. Beautiful! The paper size is 23'' x 17'', with a picture size of 21" x 14".

''Bulliver at Nursery Pool'' depicts GWR 0-4-2 No 1470, with its Autocoach, crossing the River Dart after leaving Buckfastleigh bound for Totnes. 'Bulliver' was the local nickname for this Autotrain working the Totnes-Ashburton branchline. The picture is of magnificnt proportions: a lovely river scene framed by trees with children on the riverbank. Image size 24'' x 16.5'' on art paper 28'' x 22''.

Knowing all about the Robey Trust, and our constant search for funds, he made us a very generous offer. The prints were doing no good where they were so he decided that if they could be of use in raising funds for the Trust, he would be happy to instigate this as a fund-raising gesture. He has donated the prints to the Trust, personally signed each print, and we can sell the prints to benefit Trust funds.

To make it a bargain to purchasers, too, we sell the prints at £20 each (which is a fraction of the price you'd normally see prints of this quality sell for) including P&P in a stout cardboard tube.

If you would like one of these lovely prints, please contact Dave Davies.

This generator set appears to be a 2-cylinder horizontally-opposed petrol engine with pressurised lubrication system (there is an oil pressure gauge) integral with a generator and associated switchgear and two 3-pin outlets (plug and cable included). There is reason to believe it may be of military origin. It seems either never to have been used or has had so little use, it needs no restoration, only a superficial clean-up...or rather, dust-off and wipe-over. The petrol tank is still almost full. It has not been run - or even tried - in my ownership. Weight about 2 cwt. Size about 2' 6" square x 2' high. On a wheeled trolley.

£250 or offers. Please contact Dave Davies.
